Heatmap

When to use:

When wanting to record and track users' actions on any given page:

To know where visitors click their cursor or tap their finger (Click and tap heatmaps);
To find out if users click on elements that aren’t links (Link test);
To see where visitors move their mouse on the screen in desktop devices (Move heatmaps);
To know in percentage how far users scroll down in a page (Scroll heatmaps).

How to use:

1. Install a tool and send the URL(S) of the site to start the test. In Hotjar it's possible to exclude elements (adding their CSS selectors) to avoid distractions;
2. Analyse the results.

Advantages:

- Gives an overview of how users behave.

Disadvantages:

- Can encourage analysts to make assumptions that may not be correct;
- Can't explain why certain things happened.
